Recommendations of the Bahá’í Community of Malaysia to the National Unity Blueprint

In 2013, the Malaysian government appointed the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) to foster national unity and social cohesion in Malaysian society.  The Council is also mandated to develop the National Unity Blueprint.  To gather the concerns and recommendations of civil society, the NUCC held nationwide state dialogues from February 22 to March 30 2014.  The feedback from the voices of the grassroots is to serve as significant input into the National Unity Blueprint.

The Bahá’í Community of Malaysia, whose members come from the cross-section of society, was moved to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on the issues before us. We do so because of our sense of shared responsibility and our hope for this blessed nation.  Members of the Baha’i community participated actively in the state dialogues across Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.  Baha’i representatives shared perspectives on various issues related to unity and presented numerous recommendations to the Government.

Unity is the fundamental message of the Baha’i Faith.  Bahá’u’lláh, the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá’í Faith declared: “The well-being of mankind, its peace and security are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” This implies that the first step essential for the peace and progress of mankind is its unification. However, to this day, we find many still take the opposite view: they look upon unity as an ultimate, almost unattainable goal and rather concentrate on remedying all the other ills of mankind, which are but various symptoms and side effects of disunity.

The Bahá’í Community believes that in the face of difficult situations such as this faced by our nation at this juncture, it may be useful to identify relevant principles to guide our collective way forward before launching into action plans.  In light of this, the Baha’i community presented the National Unity Consultative Council with a paper outlining our “Recommendations to the National Unity Blueprint”.

In this document, several key principles such as the Oneness of Mankind, Justice, Consultation, Equality, Empowerment and Education were articulated along with recommendations in four  major areas namely education, legislation, community/neighbourhoods and media.  We believe these principles will serve as street lights to ensure unity of thought by all parties concerned to guide us in the search for national unity.
